Birmingham Water Works

The Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB), founded in 1871, produces on average 100 million gallons of potable water per day. The system has a maximum capacity of 189 million gallons per day. BWWB has four treatment plants (Carson, Putnam, Shades Mountain and Western) that receive water from the Cahaba River/Lake Purdy, Inland Lake and the Black Warrior River. The system has 51 storage tanks with a combined storage capacity of 75,776,000 gallons of water. BWWB serves a population of 600,000 people with a distribution network of 3,903 miles of pipe with 200,026 service connections. In addition, there are 13,185 fire hydrants in the system.

Clayton County

Clayton County Water Authority (CCWA) in Clayton County, Georgia, produces up to 39 million gallons per day of potable water through a system of distribution mains 1,253 miles long. CCWA evaluated their distribution system chlorine residuals and determined that although CCWA was investing many man hours in flushing, they could not maintain residual levels. CCWA determined that they needed a way to both increase chlorine residuals and decrease labor hours invested.

Naples, Florida

A dead-end water line extends down a cul-de-sac located in a low demand portion of the distribution system. In order to provide adequate fire protection, water in this 8-inch dead-end water line has a long hydraulic residence time. This portion of the water system was a continuing water quality problem for Collier County’s Water Department because it was difficult to maintain adequate chlorine residuals. In order to keep the chlorine residual as high as possible, the Collier County Water Department regularly dispatched a distribution maintenance crew to manually flush this water line using the last fire hydrant at the end of the street. This regular manual flushing operation consumed substantial crew time and associated cost.
